LOVING HANDS
Good Day, Friends of Sew-n-Sews Sun Lakes
The spotlight this month is on the Loving Hands SIG. Since 2004, the 19 members of this charitable special interest group have sewn, knitted and crocheted 7169 handmade gifts, mostly layettes, which were given to mothers of babies at risk or who lost the fight for life in 6 Phoenix hospitals Web Ed.
OUR MISSION
By Terry Moran of Loving Hands
Loving Hands Special Interest Group caters to the needs of local hospitals and their bereavement programs. We began sewing for preemies at Chandler Regional Hospital about nine years ago. That was great fun, but we learned of a much greater need through the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) charge nurse, Vicki Vandenheuval. Vicki is the Bereavement Coordinator for CRH NICU. She asked if we would make tiny clothes for the babies who are too tiny or sick to survive. The parents and families, of course, are grief-stricken. Seeing their tiny one in a beautiful gown and hat wrapped in a matching blanket helps them know that others care about their tragic loss. This is a very special ministry and one that is much needed.
The ladies of this group possess immense talent from cutting fabric to sewing gowns and crocheting or knitting beautiful hats and blankets. Everything is color-coordinated and made from new materials. Several members make sock dolls called “Lovie Dolls” which are given to babies in distress to always have the scent of “Mommy” close. We serve 6 hospitals in the Phoenix area.

Grandmothers in Sun Lakes, Arizona, continue the tradition of mothers everywhere by making things to give away. Strangers all, their friendships are based on a common interest. Their passion for sewing has found outlets in projects that enhance the lives of the greater Phoenix community of which Sun Lakes is a part. One group from Sew-N-Sews of Sun Lakes dresses an entire class of first graders at a nearby school located in a disadvantaged neighborhood. Meet Ardis Walker who sews for Sewing Smiles for Kids.
